About the Author

In my fantasies, I am a 21st Century Superwoman, handling the duties of wife, mother, and professional both effortlessly and efficiently, with a killer wardrobe and flawless hair as perfect accents to my life. In reality, I’m a 21st Century Superwoman flubbing my way through life, praying that I don’t screw up my marriage, my children, or my job! I keep my maternity clothes on stand-by because they are comfortable and actually fit, and my afro, which is big and curly, makes me feel absolutely fabulous, even when nothing else seems to be working for me.

I’ve been an educator longer than I’ve been a wife, a wife longer than I’ve been a mother, and a mother longer than I’ve been totally content with the fact that although I don’t do everything perfectly, everything has been a perfect fit for me.

I write because it makes me feel good. I write because the words I scribble breathe a truth I often crave in the every day routines of life. I write because it captures forever the moments I hope never to forget.

Thanks for visiting my blog! Happy reading!

  1. Marilyn, I just sent an email to be a contributor for my community blog, Navigating the Change. Please let me know if you do not receive it.

  2. I wanted to thank you for your confidence, especially in your last post. Your posts have always been so inspiring and have helped me a lot over the past couple weeks as I have been working towards my own personal goal. I have been struggling to raise support for an internship with a church next year and I know exactly how you feel when it comes to those doubting eyes and snide remarks. I have hit a wall that seems so tall that I need a super hero to get me over it and I just wanted to tell you that sometimes your words are my superhero and you have really helped me get over those smaller walls in the past. If you are willing I would greatly appreciate your advice on how to get over this wall with God’s help.

    • Thank you so much! The one thing I love about blogging is connecting to the universal truths we share as humans. I appreciate you for taking the time to comment, but more importantly, I want to say that faith is the way to go. Be assured that the outcome is for the good of you and/or those with whom God wants you to connect. My Pastor says that a faith untested is a faith that can’t be trusted, and I believe that.
Even in the struggle, remember that there is an ultimate good that God has for you. Today’s walls are tomorrow’s stepping stones. Know that God has your back (and front and sides), and your tests are just God’s way of preparing you for his ultimate assignment for you. Sometimes, when things don’t work out exactly the way we hope in the time in which we hope, we sometimes begin to question ourselves, wondering if we “misheard” God’s plan. I want to caution you against these feelings. Today’s setbacks are tomorrows “set ups” for success. Be patient. Know that struggle is just preparation, and when you are walking tall in today’s assignment, you’ll still experience struggle, but it will be in preparation for the next thing God has for you.

  3. Stumbled across your blog and found it wonderfully honest and refreshing. And those kids are fabulously cute!

  4. Your blog; your rules. I feel the same way about my poetry. Ugh, the confines of meter and rhyme. Gimme some free verse or slam poetry because I want to use the words that come to me, not the word with the right number of syllables.

    • That’s what I love about what I like to call “pleasure writing.” It just needs to feel right to you, no one else, and usually, when it does, indeed, feel right, it’s a dynamic piece. Thanks for the visit (and comment) to this page. It reminds me that I need to update. So much has changed!

  6. You have a great way of expressing yourself. Like you, I’m married, have a kid, am slightly irritable and unfun of late, plus work in education. Also like you, I’ve committed to blogging once a week. Enjoy the journey!

  9. Hi Marilyn,

This post is great. I always relate to every piece penned down with honesty & nothing more, by women in specific. There’s a lot to learn & share. I’m a mother of an infant daughter & blogging has become my personal window to explore & explode too 🙂 Sending love from Mumbai, India. See you soon!

    • Hello Neha,
I’m glad that I’m not alone in this. Sometimes I feel like I’m on some island struggling to find my way back, but blogging has really helped me put things in perspective. I guess writing about what I’m feeling forces me to articulate for myself, learn from myself, and resolve for myself. It has really helped. I hope you all the success in your own explorations and explosions! Good luck.
      Marilyn
